10 Things

Today I was browsing through a friend’s fabulous second hand lifestyle blog and I came across her little tribute to Ten Things I Hate About You. Which I have now decided to appropriate for myself, as I am a fan of lists! This one was ten about her, I have kept her sentence starters because I quite liked them.

  1. Collecting Perth Wildcats memorabilia, Audrey Hepburn memorabilia and my newest one is scarves. Started as a necessity for what I thought would be my new job but now is just a bunch of scarves.
  2. Wishing for some fun time with my number one. Tonight is their first night off in more than a week and they want a night to themselves (being a very individual, independent person). However since I so rarely get to see them I am struggling to keep myself from sending them twenty “what are you up to,” “how is your night,” “wanna hang out” messages. Sigh.
  3. Feeling antsy for some reason. It’s been a tiring and emotional week and my sleep schedule is so out of whack that I no longer know when I am actually tired or not.
  4. Watching season one of Friends. Funniest show of all time!!
  5. Smiling whenever my dad tells me to, even in text. This goes back to my child modelling days when I was taught smile number one (big smile with teeth) and smile number two (little smile, no teeth). My whole life whenever I have been upset or angry my dad will ask me to show him “number one” and no matter how old I am (as in how old I was last week when I called him upset about something. Also on Monday when I sent him a message saying “No job L” and he replied with “No worries SMILE, and think of the positives LOVE YOU!!” I smiled even though I was crying at he time) it makes me smile. Without fail. Gosh my dad is pretty amazing.
  6. Thinking that I really wanna see my number one, that I should have saved half my Turkish bread and fish melt for later instead of having it all for dinner, and that I should really clean up my room.
  7. Recently enjoyed how many gripes I have with episode two of the new season of Game of Thrones as a fan of the book series. For example, when Brienne and Cersei were chatting this is what was happening in my head: “WTF BRIENNE ALWAYS LOVES RENLY NOT JAMIE YOU TWAT! SHE IS LOYAL AND TRUE TO HER WORD BECAUSE SHE HAS A KNIGHT’S HONOUR AND FOLLOWS THROUGH ON HER PROMISES TO EVERYONE, NOT BECAUSE SHE WANTS JAMIE IN HER BREECHES! ARGH!!
  8. Totally Addicted to bass? It’s okay if you don’t get the reference, I listen to some obscure music sometimes. Probably more TV show and books, to the detriment of almost two university degrees, one hot body, one body image and almost two whole years of my life..
  9. Craving a hug from my number one. They have a way of making me feel safe and home and excited and loved all at the same time. Plus it’s been a rough week and I would really like some level of comfort beyond “something will come up eventually, keep applying.”
  10. Looking forward to the start of the Bulls’ off season in the wee hours of Monday, the Wildcats’ Ball next Saturday, the new X Men movie and Game of Thrones. And of course The Winds of Winter. But I have a feeling that the more people complain about it, the longer it will take to reach our Jon Snow deprived hands.

So that’s ten things about me, hopefully you don’t hate them!

ATTN Marshmallows: Veronica Mars – My First Thoughts

Dear Americans and other people not in my timezone (Perth, Western Australia),

I am at this very moment deeply sorry for you, as you have to wait a whole day to view the epic that is the Veronica Mars movie. While I purchased it off iTunes (a first for me) at 9pm March 13 Perth time (so midnight March 14 Australian iTunes/AEDT time), that would have roughly been 9am March 12 for you guys, which is just too long of a time to wait.

I will admit that I was a wee bit sceptical about how this beLoVed (see what I did there?) television show would translate into a movie. All of those doubts though were shattered within the first oh I don’t know, 30 seconds? The tone of the movie is not only a match for that of the show, but in places is heightened at moments you would expect cinematically. It had all the wry wit, voiceovers, call backs to dognapping and Corny and Clemmons, moments that made me squeal and gasp and give me chills all over. There is one character in particular that surprised me in the movie in how much they changed between show and movie, but in a good way (hopefully after seeing the movie you will know who I am talking about and appreciate the struggle in shielding their identity here). While in the show they didn’t stand out a great deal in comparison to their frequent scene mates, I was surprised at how invested I was in their story through the film, especially because it is one that could continue should there be more movies. They serve as a sort of reminder of what the show was all about: the seedy underbelly of a small town with glimmers of hope for its redemption that ultimately get quashed by the basest desires and fears of humanity.

I’m going to try really hard not to spoil any plot points here, but just wow. I am still just buzzing over this movie and I honestly don’t think I have enjoyed a film this much in a long time.

Without spoiling anything, here is a little PMI (plus, minus, interesting) chart from my first (of what will likely be 23 million) viewing of my most anticipated movie in a very long time (I will update it in about a week or so to give people the chance to watch the movie, at which point it’s really your own fault if you spoil something for yourself. I hardly blame the internet and the entire world for spoiling the ending of Breaking Bad for me even though I haven’t watched a single episode) :

Deputy Leo.
Yummy. Although there was a little bit of Schmidt in the perfomance I suspect. Also his hair was very much lacking compared to the luscious quiff he last sported in VM.
Gia Goodman. The Gia in the movie was not the Gia that I remember from season two. Perhaps it was the content of the movie, or the fact that the characters are all now ten years older, but she was a lot more serious and “blah” than the fun loving Gia of old. The role of Lou Cobbler. Without giving anything away I was intrigued by his addition to the 09er group. I think it speaks to the depth of the show and the actor that I found myself genuinely questioning if I had maybe missed this character on the TV show.
The new Sheriff Lamb. While I did miss the rapport between Don Lamb and Veronica, I was interested in the new dynamic within the sheriff’s office brought about by Don’s older brother. Daniel Lamb is much more abrasive that his brother, although Don had the benefit of a much longer time frame to explore his character. Leighton Meester.
Not to take anything away from the actress who played Carrie Bishop in the movie, but considering the role in the movie wasn’t exactly extensive, I don’t see why Leighton Meester couldn’t have taken time out of her schedule to film for a couple of days. Carrie Bishop in the movie is a pop star, which seems like it would have worked well for Leighton Meester, not to mention probably better singing also.
The ending of the movie (at first viewing ) was a little ambiguous in what happens to the new Sheriff Lamb, and I’m not too sure how I feel about the implied ending. While I think everyone knew that Veronica’s comeback to Neptune would change her future plans, this definitely wasn’t the direction I expected it to go. It would be interesting to see Veronica navigate Neptune now as an adult with law school behind her, but I just don’t think she would be able to abide by the law for longer than a minute.

Barely any Kanes.I understand that the Kanes wrapped up their stories with VM in season two, however they are such a huge part of the show and of Neptune that I was disappointed in the minimal involvement of Neptune’s first family. Celeste pretty much just served as a cog in the sheriff’s storyline, one that could have been easily interchangeable. Again, without spoiling, her involvement and who in particular she interacts with could have easily led to some nice callbacks to Lilly. The movie does a good job in exposition of establishing how Lilly’s murder brought Logan and Veronica together, and the ways in which it changed both of them, but I have always thought there was a third person who was deeply affected by her murder that never got the chance to show those effects. Eli Navarro. My goodness he took me on a rollercoaster ride in this movie. First squealing at the first glimpse of him, then gut wrenching gasps, then “Weevil and Veronica, take 2” excitement, then “Oh Weevil” come the end. The relationship he has with Veronica was one of my favourites in the show, one that while different to Wallace was equally as familial and protective. I would have liked to see that dynamic more in the movie, but I know that you can’t exactly please everyone!
Neptune High reunion. The entire sequence from Veronica’s refusal to go, to her eventual interaction with Madison St Clair, to the main action and fisticuffs between the boys and (what I loved most) Clemmons and Veronica having a moment on the stairs. I think all our lives have been boring without you, Veronica.

I have a million more things that I like, I will try to keep the updates to a minimum but I am about to watch this movie again, so I’m sure something will come up soon.

Savour the one hour and 48 minutes of this movie Marshmallows, it was a phenomenal experience and one that I want more of!

Friday Five: Gilmore Boys Who Made It Big (Day 41)

I have been a Gilmore Girl from when it was first broadcast in Australia on Channel 9. I can remember sitting with my mum watching it, and being at some family party and sneaking into my cousin’s bedroom to watch the one where Rory turned 16. In all my years watching this delightful show, one thing always hits me: the incredible amount of dreamy young actors that the show produced. So in no particular order, and with the dates of their first GG appearance and of their post GG fame (and more than five, because I can!):

Dean Forester (Jared Padalecki, 2000-2005)Dean

Dean was Rory’s first everything pretty much. I personally am not the hugest fan of his but in rewatching season one episodes, he is just so adorable with his floppy hair and tall boy awkwardness. Dean eventually got married, had an affair with Rory then faded into Stars Hollow when the affair came out. Jared Padalecki then went on to become the brother of a Dean, as Sam Winchester (2005-present) in Supernatural.

Tristan DuGrey (Chad Michael Murray, 2000-2001)chad1
Tristan was Dean’s Chilton rival, poor boy. I would always choose Tristan over Den, but then again I have a thing for the worst possible guys.
chad2Lucas Scott (One Tree Hill, 2003-2009, 2012)

Dave Rygalski (Adam Brody, 2002-2003)AdamDaveRygalskiadam2

Seth Cohen (The OC, 2003-2007)

Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia, 2001-2006)Jess-jess-mariano-23217484-494-700Peter Petrelli (Heroes, 2006-2010)

Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry, 2004-2007)logan1THE GOOD WIFE
Cary Agos (The Good Wife, 2009-present)

Zach Van Gerbig (Todd Lowe, 2002-2007)todd_zachTodd-LoweTerry Bellefluer (True Blood, 2008-2013)

Alex Lesman (Billy Burke, 2003)

Lorelai---Alex-gilmore-girls-139988_533_400In the course of my reading, I discovered that Alex is the one boyfriend that Lorelai did not technically break up with, on screen anyway.

billy1Charlie Swan (Twilight, 2008-2012) billy2and Miles  Matheson (Revolution, 2012-present)

Luke (Dean’s Friend) (Max Greenfield, 2003)max4Who was also Deputy Sheriff Leo D’Amato (Veronica Mars, 2005-2007, 2014)max2a Young Sandy Cohen (The OC, 2007) max3and Schmidt (New Girl, 2011-present) max1

Graham Sullivan (Teddy Dunn, 2004)

702088_320Rory goes on a date with Graham at the end of season four, the date where she calls Dean to come rescue her and thus begins the affair.. Graham then goes on to a little town called Neptune, California where he becomes Duncan Kane, ill-fated boyfriend of Veronica Mars the same year he is on GG until his run on Veronica Mars ended in 2006.
duncan-kane-profileNot to mention Brandon Routh in a season one cameo before he was Superman, Jon Hamm in the season three episode where Lorelai asks her mother for a guy’s phone number, Sebastian Bach as Gil,  Scott Cohen as Max, Nick Offerman as creepy cousin Beau, and the delightful Daniel Pudi working at the Yale Daily News.

The moral of this story? Gilmore Girls is amazing and all time, and society owes it a significant debt.
Have a great weekend!

Friday Five: Summertime Series (Day 34)

Sweltering heat plus holidays equals a lot of indoor time. While I occasionally spend that time at friend’s houses or at movies, more often than not I sprawl out on the couch or my bed and turn to my favourite summer time TV shows.

The following five I watch year round. They always make me feel warmer, and in the mood to sit at the beach discussing relationship problems and solving mysteries with a bottle of wine.

Vampire Update (Day 11)

So I thought I’d give a bit of an update on my Vampire Diaries progress. I’m about to start watching episode 11 of season four, however I have to admit to cheating just a little bit. Ever since I started using the Vampire Diaries Wikia page and found that they had transcripts for every episode, I have read some episodes more so than watching them… However, that is more so a time saver than a sign of disinterest; I am still very much getting addicted to this show. The parts of episodes that I tend to skip over are the Stefan/Elena angsty parts (except for the compelled truth or dare scene, that was AWESOME!) and a lot of Matt. I really just don’t like him much; he started out all happy human, then Vicki died and he was very emo, he went away for a while and when he came back he seemed like an entirely different actor (I actually went and looked up the character on the wiki I was that confused, but apparently just a voice deepening growth spurt). The only time I like him is when he’s being kick ass, and this is mostly because of all the characters on the show, he one of the very few non-supernaturals that goes out and risks his life. I think I’ll just dot point bits and pieces of my experience with the show thus far, as my thoughts are a little bit all over the place:

• Klaus: Hated him initially, don’t like him much now except when he is with Caroline. He becomes so much more human and hunky when he is with her, and whenever he shows real emotion.

• Jeremy looks so much better with short hair than with the early season floppy hair. Another character that I enjoy because of his lack of supernatural, though with this hunter thing that’s now changed.

• Poor Rebekah. I probably love her most out of all the characters, and all she wants is to love and be loved. She’s the most loyal out of all the characters; even after Klaus stakes her (a million times) she maintains that he is her family, same with Esther. I like to think that if I could be any character on this show it would be her, except I’d have a thing for Tyler and not Matt.

Damon sitting on Alaric’s gravestone and talking to him may have been the closest I have come to crying at this show so far

• I understand that Bonnie and most of the witches we’ve met have been Bennet witches or descendants, but surely there are Caucasian descendants of the Original witch too? Bonnie annoys me too, she always straddles the line between wanting to save Elena/the vampires, and wanting to restore the balance in nature as a witch. Pick a side already.

• Caroline and Rebekah could take over the world if they worked together I think. I love them both so much, and they both do bitchy mean girl so well that I would love to see them direct that at someone together (please hopefully this Hayley werewolf).

That’s all for now, hope your week is going well!

Obligation Viewing and Guilty Pleasures (Day 4)

So as previously mentioned, between all my job applying and basketball playing I’m getting very into The Vampire Diaries at the moment. Currently I am in the middle of the episode where (SPOILER!!) Caroline reveals to her mother that she is a vampire when the sheriff is killing Damon and Stefan. Also in this episode is some Tyler and Jeremy bromancing (Tyler is my new love, I can’t resist some almost-werewolf brooding). Continue reading Obligation Viewing and Guilty Pleasures (Day 4)

Friday Five: Cougar Town Season One

Though S01E07 is my all-time favourite episode of Cougar Town, I have done this list in episode order and I have struggled to keep the list to five because quite frankly, this show is perfection! These episodes are the ones I would show to someone who has only judged Cougar Town by its title, and I think they epitomise the direction the show has taken after the first six episodes (at least for the first season. There’s Only One Tree Hill

The end of an era.

Tonight I cried my way through the final episodes of one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I sang along to Gavin deGraw, cried when Keith showed up at Dan’s hospital bed, remembering back to when I first started watching this show. This show has taught me so much about people, about love and friendships, passion and dedication. It introduced me to “hos over bros”, alternative music, the dangers of webcams, fantasy boy drafts and the amazing Jake Jagielski. The mixture of sports and music and books and growing up in a small town just completely spoke to me as a young girl still finding her way. My love of basketball and certainly my belief that sports matter and that they can do amazing things is constantly affirmed by this show. It may seem like just a TV show, but I can honestly say I would not be who I am today without it. I am going to miss it so much. It’s like a friend who knows just what to say in every cirumstance. Nothing could take its place.

I don’t want to be
Anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do
Is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms
Wondering what I’ve got to do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Here We Cooooooome!!

In 'The OC' this is the Bait Shop club.

When the weather gets this kind of chilly and all you want to do is snuggle up and hibernate there’s really only one place I like to go. It’s nothing like where you live, and nothing like you imagine.

There are many TV shows that I know will put me in certain moods. When I’m feeling in need of cheering up I go straight to “Friends” or “Parks and Recreation.” When I’m feeling lost its “Gilmore Girls.” When I’m in the mood to look for clues and solve mysteries it’s “Veronica Mars” that I will head to. As this dreary and frosty weather continues I head west; first with one of my new favourites in “90210” but the main event on these winter days is always, always, always only one show.
